Operation: T-3

Posted in A Lil About Me, Goals, Health & Wellness, Motivations, Nutrition, Self Improvement, Weight Management with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 23, 2012 by Angela

I tend to approach my fitness goals with a measurable & specific end result. I’ve found that garners me the most success.

A couple years ago, it was Operation: Weights & Measures designed to reduce weight and slim down the measurements considerably. While mostly successful…I mused at the time about my ultimate goal…one which I am ready to embark upon since I have managed to maintain results.

For my 2K12 goal I’ve dubbed my mission OPERATION:T-3

My goal is to once again obtain a tight & toned tummy.

So that there’s my starting point and with lots of hard work will only be evidenced as a glimpse of the past.

I have my work cut off for me but an up for the challenge that body sculpting presents. I will be discussing all related matters under the abovementioned post title of Operstion: T-3.

See you next month with my first progress report & visuals.

First & foremost: HAPPY TWENTY-TWELVE!!!!!

Hello & welcome to the first monthly week-long installment devoted to all things in the health & wellness genre.

Wow, how did we get here?!?!?! Wasn’t it just 2011 a blink of the eye ago? Time is marching right along in this new millennium. Hopefully it’s been progressing on a positive note.

With that same sentiment in mind…..let’s kick the week off on a wonderfully healthy note!

This has been a perpetual WIP (work-in-progress) for me but honestly a labor of love because it has broadened my knowledge based and helped me to achieve/maintain many of my health & wellness goals.

As always, I have so much I hope to explore & share with you….if LIFE is gracious enough to afford me the opportunity, I will do just that!!

Have a great day!!!

…And So, December Cometh

Posted in Uncategorized on December 1, 2011 by Angela

Greetings friends,

Welcome to December 2011 and Happy Friday Eve,

Hope the week has been a good one for you. Mine has been pretty good as I get myself back in the groove after returning to work this past Monday from a 18-day vacation/stay-cation.

I was blessed to spend 2/3 of the month of November in an extreme state of calm. This worked well into my master plan as I prepared myself for entering into the new year.

For a while I have tended to use the fall months as a period of time where I take stock of what has been learned, gained and accomplished thus far over the year. The purpose of this is to align the information with goals and actions which I had desired to achieve or work on that had been carefully established the prior year.

I know many people say they don’t make resolutions but in my limited experience that has almost always seemed to be the people that characteristically lack discipline in one or more areas of their life…most often it is in the “more” category…and they aren’t the type of people that I tend to put much stock in, I’m sorry to have to admit.

I think lack of discipline is a fundamental choice and hugely damaging character flaw, not something I tend to easily be able to overlook when determining the depth of friendship with them. Please don’t mistake me, I don’t judge by any means because neither can I reward nor condemn anyone for their personal conduct. I can only take care of me and mine.

Once again, limited life experience has taught me that people who lack discipline don’t take too kindly to people that maintain accountability and strive to improve/achieve rather than just “letting it all hang out”

I am starting the month anew with re-dedication to former established goals as well as re-starting some others that seemed to stall a bit.

I am excited with kick-starting the prospect of more growth in the upcoming year this December….not to mention it’s my birth month so I am in a further state of joy!!!

P.S. Only 28 more shopping days til my birthday!!!!

November Seasonals

Posted in Health & Wellness, Nutrition with tags , , , , , , , on November 30, 2011 by Angela

These are typically the fruits and vegetables which are in season in many regions during the month of November and therefore most likely to be found in your local supermarket and/or farmer’s market.

This week/month I will feature from this list for Recipes for Health, Focus on Fruit & Focus on Vegetables. Also, you will see the month next to items which may have been previously highlighted so you can search the tags for any additional posts.

Of course, you will find some variance here and there by your state based on soil, climate, temperatures, etc but these are fairly standard for quite a bit of the United States.

Now, if you are environmentally conscience and trying to manage, reduce or maintain an ecological/carbon footprint then this information will matter very much to you for several reasons.

Reason 1a: you are more likely to find these items in quantity and usually on sale in the store therefore making them cost effective in terms of budgeting.

Reason 1b: those who are meal planners (and I am always shocked to hear how many aren’t) will basically have their grocery list set up for them and not a lot of running around store to store to see who has what. Also, allowing you to cook with fresh not frozen for optimal nutrients.

Reason 2: when you frequent farmer’s markets, produce stands or live in/near farming communities, like I prefer to do, you can save even more in price and benefit from top quality items that were just in the ground literally minutes/hours before coming to market.

Personally I like that farmers don’t sell by weight like supermarkets plus they tend to wheel & deal, barter and bargain with you quite often “throwing in extras for free”. As you establish relationships, they will even “hold back” items for you or reserve a special pick from the back of the truck for you. As a result, you can often walk away with quite a bit of fruits and vegetables for several days/meals at less than $10. That just doesn’t happen at the grocery store with any regularity.

I usually go to the market with $20 and almost never spend it all unless I am getting a bunch of other miscellaneous stuff like handmade soap, lotion or whatever else Mother Earth stuff they are showcasing that screams my name.

Reason 3: this can help those who have considered breaking ground of your own for a fruit/vegetable garden then this will give a little idea or information as to what you may wish to plant.

Detoxification….RR* (relevant reposting*)

Posted in Fitness, Health & Wellness, Nutrition with tags , , , , , , , , , , on November 28, 2011 by Angela

Detoxification is basically cleansing the mind and body of the harmful toxins that can cause many health problems. While there are some toxins we (seemingly) have no control over, there are many that we do have control over ingesting such as alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, additives, refined foods and sugars to name a few. Therefore, it benefits our bodies tremendously to periodically, if not permanently in some cases, give our bodies a chance to rest and recuperate.

First and foremost, before adopting a nontoxic diet, it’s important to work on clearing the mind and the spirit. There are various processes that you may go about to achieve this including prayer, yoga, meditation, tai chi, feng shui, etc. If none of these appeal to you, then at the very least get a few scented candles and endeavor to have a little “quiet time”. You would be amazed at how greatly it improves your energy level and outlook on life to eliminate the negative thoughts and daily stresses which weigh you down and replace them with peaceful emotions.

Now that you’ve gotten the mind & spirit together, you are better equipped to make and maintain a detoxification diet. With repeated implementing and as you become more in tuned with your body, you may gradually adopt a better overall diet with virtually little effort. In the long run that’s what you should be shooting for, achieving a healthy & well-balanced daily diet.

**source The Physicians’ Guide Natural Health for African Americans Marcellus A. Walker, MD & Kenneth B. Singleton, MD**

Make simple changes in your eating habits
You can begin the process of detoxification by switching from foods that are more congesting to those that are less so. Congesting foods contain more toxins and slow down the digestive system.

MOST CONGESTING: Allergenic foods, organ meats, hydrogenated fats, other fats, fried foods, refined flour, meat and poultry, sugars

MODERATELY CONGESTING: Milk, eggs, baked goods, wheat, rice, pasta

LEAST CONGESTING: Beans, oats, millet, nuts, seeds, water, herbs, green vegetables, other vegetables, roots

Limit your diet to fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains
For a deeper level of detoxification, restrict your diet to these whole foods, either cooked or raw. Keep your food consumption at a 3:1 ratio, with three parts vegetables to one part fruit per meal. Avoid breads or baked goods and dairy products. This diet eliminates all animal products. The leafy green vegetables are very cleansing for the gastrointestinal system.

Eat only raw fruits and vegetables
This diet takes the fruit-and-vegetable-and-grain diet one step farther, removing the grain and requiring that the foods be consumed raw. Maintain the 3:1 rule, choosing three servings of vegetables to one serving of fruit. Eating foods raw preserves the maximum levels of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.

Drink only fruit and vegetable juices
The next level of detoxification involves the exclusive use of juices, teas, and vegetable broths rather than whole foods. Fresh juices require minimal digestion, while providing essential nutrients. Miso, a form of fermented soybean, can also be eaten during this level of detoxification to encourage colon cleansing. We often recommend that our patients add spirulina, an algae powder available at health food stores, to their juices to avoid fatigue during a liquid juice fast. We believe juice fasts tend to be more healing than water fasts, since they flush the system while at the same time providing nutrients to nourish and rebuild the body.

Drink water only
A water-only fast offers the oldest and most intense process of detoxification, but this type of fast leaves many people weak. However, fasting is one of the oldest forms of natural treatment.

Dating In A Holding Pattern….

This phrase definitely describes my “dating life” for a quite a bit….I have gone on a few dates and I am really resisting posting about them because they have been kinda comical.. I will allow time to past and then talk about them but I am still accepting and attempting (albeit halfheartedly at times)…but the above picture sums up what the terrain has been looking like which is why I am circling above….I’ve got plenty of reserve fuel and can wait until the skies are like this before I am cleared to land….

I’m Falling In Love…

Posted in Uncategorized on September 23, 2011 by Angela

This is my absolute favorite season out of the year…

Well, in actuality being the true Midwesterner that I am, I suppose I enjoy having four distinct seasons equally and appreciate them all for what they have to offer….so it sums it up just to say that “I’m Falling In Love…”

…with the crisp, cool evenings and brisk, chilling mornings.

…with the vibrant explosion of colors of foliage in preparation itself for winter.

…with the fall holidays.

…with the sun as it peeks out for its limited engagement day by day.

…with the earlier arrival of the lesser of the great lights God blessed us with (Genesis 1:16) to fulfill its uniquely designed purpose.

…with the cooler weather fashions: boots, scarves, sweaters and such

Happy Autumnal Equinox….
